Hluboká nad Vltavou: 50 km from Červená Lhota

The Chateau in Hluboká is one of the most sought-after castles and chateaus in the Czech Republic. It stands on the nothern border of the Budweiss pond district on a steep promontory above the river Vltava (or Moldau). The originally king’s castle Hluboká (Frauenberg) was founded altogether with nearby České Budějovice (or Budweiss) in the 13^th century by the Czech king Přemysl Otakar II..

The castle went through a number difficult periods and was rebuilt in four styles. Today’s New-Gothic look of 1871 was commissioned by the Lords of Schwarzenberg who had had the castle in hands since 1661. The said reconstruction resulted in 140 richly furnished rooms, 11 towers (the main one 60 meters tall) and bastions. The rugged facade of the chateau is dominated with a large Schwarzenberg’s coat-of-arms bearing the family’s motto “NIL NISI RECTUM\" (Nothing but the law).

The final amendments were made under the ownership of Jan Adolf II of Schwarzenberg and his wife Eleonora who decided to make the castle look like Windsor, the British royal castle. Within a walking distance from the chateau, there is an English-style park. The original riding hall was turned into a gallery hosting exhibitions and collections produced and owned by Aleš South Bohemian Gallery.
